Fanfarenzug Potsdam
Fanfarenzüge gibt es in aller Welt. Überall wird mit Enthusiasmus
musiziert und die bunten Aufzüge lachen einem bei diversen Gelegenheiten entgegen. Mit
dem Fanfarenzug Potsdam unter seinem Leiter Leo Ertel haben wir nun den Meister aller
Fanfarenzüge vor uns. Es gab ihn schon in der DDR und er nahm bereits dort die
Spitzenposition ein. Seinen ersten internationalen Erfolg verzeichnete der Potsdamer
Fanfarenzug 1991. Beim Bundesturnfest in Graz / Österreich wurde er
«Bundesturnfestsieger» von 48 teilnehmenden Musikzügen und errang den ersten Platz in
der Gästeklasse. Im gleichen Jahr noch gewannen die Bläser und Trommler aus Potsdam im
Europapokalausscheid den Europapokal in der Marschwertung, den Europapokal für die Show
und den Europapokal im Gesamtklassement. An Leo Ertel ging aufgrund dieser Wertung der
Europäische Dirigentenpreis. Das war der Start für eine atemberaubende internationale
Erfolgsbilanz der Potsdamer.
Von den vielen nun folgenden Auftritten sind hier nur die genannt, die Höhepunkte in der
Geschichte des Fanfarenzuges wurden. So beispielsweise - ebenfalls 1991 - die Teilnahme am
23. Internationalen Musikwettstreit in Elst/Niederlande mit dem 1. Platz im
Showwettbewerb, der mit dem 1. Preis cum laude an die Potsdamer ging. Die jungen Leute
wurden u. a. wieder einmal «Deutscher Turnerbund-Meister» und reisten nach Irland, wo
sie regelrecht gefeiert wurden.
1993 ging es nach Kanada, wo sie in 11 Tagen 32 Auftritte in 10 Städten absolvierten, an
der Calgary-Stampede-Parade teilnahmen und dort auf Anhieb den 2. Platz belegten, was nie
vorher einem deutschen Fanfarenzug oder Orchester gelungen war.
In Kerkrade/Niederlande fanden wenige Tage später die Weltmusikwettbewerbe der Marsch-
und Showorchester statt. Ergebnis: 1. Preis und Goldmedaille im Marschwettbewerb, 1. Preis
und Goldmedaille für die Show. Damit waren die Potsdamer Mädchen und Jungen «Bester
Fanfarenzug der Welt».
1994 gab es in Belgien den 17. Internationalen Marsch- und Show-Wettstreit. Die Potsdamer
holten sämtliche Preise: «Internationaler Champion der Lage Landen», 1. Preis cum laude
für Show, 1. Preis cum laude für Marsch, und Auszeichnung mit dem «Andrej Rijken
Preis» für die höchste Punktzahl bei den Wettbewerben.
Im gleichen Jahr erfolgte die Teilnahme an der Steuben-Parade in New York und es gab
beeindruckende Auftritte in Washington.
Diese kleine Aufzählung gibt Bericht über vielerlei. Es muß sich schon um harte
Burschen und Mädchen aus Preußen handeln, die solche Strapazen mit solchen Erfolgen
verbinden können. Dazu gehören eiserne Disziplin, ein ständiges fleißiges Training
neben Schule und Beruf.
Von 1970 bis 1995 - so sagt die Statistik - haben 556.519 Mitglieder an Übungsstunden,
Auftritten, Veranstaltungen, Trainingslagern und anderen Unternehmungen des Fanfarenzuges
Potsdam teilgenommen. Von 1963 bis 1995 wurden 2.897 Auftritte absolviert, Zahlen, die
für sich sprechen. Und da kommt natürlich die Rede auch auf Leo Ertel, der den
Fanfarenzug mehr als 28 Jahre lang, seit 1970 leitet. Seinem Fleiß, seinem Geschick und -
ja, man ist geneigt zu sagen - seiner Tapferkeit ist es zu verdanken, daß die Mitglieder
des Musikzuges zusammenhalten, die jungen Leute mit Begeisterung einer sinnvollen
Freizeitbeschäftigung nachgehen, sich Sympathien in aller Welt erfreuen, und daß Tücken
und Klippen in ungewisser Zeit mit Klugheit und Bedacht umschifft wurden und werden. Ohne
das Vorbild, das Leo Ertel seinen Mädchen und Jungen ist, wäre alles das nicht zu
erreichen gewesen.
Die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Polizeiorchester Potsdam unter MD Peter Brünsing hat lange
Tradition. Von den Berufsmusikern des Polizeiorchesters erfahren die jungen Bläser und
Trommler alle nur mögliche fachliche Hilfe und Unterstützung. Auch das Polizeiorchester
Potsdam hat seinen guten Ruf weit über die Landesgrenzen Brandenburgs hinaus getragen und
mit seinen musikalischen Mitteln und Möglichkeiten der Polizei und der Musik viele neue
Freunde gewonnen.

Polizeiorchester Potsdam
There are bugle corps all the world over and it is with great
enthusiasm that music is made wherever the colourful pageants show. With the Potsdam Bugle
Korps under its conductor, Leo Ertel, we are now facing the champion of them all. The
Korps had existed in East Germany even before the political change and assumed a leading
position there. Its international breakthrough came in 1991 with the Federal Gym Festival
in Graz/Austria where it was awarded the «Federal Gym Festival Winner» out of 48
competing corps. It was also voted best participating guest band. Even in the same year,
The «Wind Instruments and Drums» from Potsdam won the European cups for Marching, Show
Display and Overall Performance. For his band’s extraordinary achievements, Leo Ertel
received the European Conductor Prize.This formed the beginning of a breathtaking
international career for the Potsdamers. Out of the countless performances that followed,
I can only draw your attention to a very few, that became highlights in the history of the
Bugle Korps. Thus for example, again in 1991, the Potsdamers also won the first prize in
the Show Competition at the 23rd Music Festival in Elst/Netherlands With Honours (Cum
Laude). As so many times before, the young people won the «German Federal Gym Association
Championship» and then travelled to Ireland where they were greeted with widespread
acclaim.
In 1993, they toured Canada, where they were giving 32 performances in 10 different cities
within 11 days! The Korps took part in the Calgary Stampede Parade and was immediately
placed second, which no German bugle corps or orchestra had ever managed before. And it
was only a few days later that they took part in the World Music Competition of bugle
corps and show orchestras in Kerkrade/Netherlands. The Korps came off with the First Prize
and the Gold Medal in the Marching Competition as well as with the First Prize and the
Gold Medal for its Show Display. This made the Potsdam boys and girls «Best Bugle Corps
in The World».
In 1994, there was the 17th International Competition of Marching Music and Show Display
in Belgium. And it was the Potsdamers who swept the board with: «International Champion
of the Lage Landen», First Prize With Honours for the Show Display, First Prize With
Honours for the March and the «Andrej Rijken Award» for best results in all parts of the
competition.
In the same year, the Steuben Parade was celebrated in New York, which the Korps took
partin, and they performed really impressively in Washington.
This tiny listing tells us quite a few things. They must be pretty tough Prussian boys and
girls who are able to combine this level of stress and strain with such a success. What
enables them to do so is iron discipline together with permanent diligent training on top
of their duties for school or job. Statistics say that from 1970 to 1995, 556,519 members
took part in exercises, performances, parades, training camps, and further events of the
Potsdam Bugle Korps. No less than 2,897 performances were given from 1963 to 1995. These
figures speak for themselves. And we should not forget to mention Leo Ertel at this point,
who has been conducting the Korps for more than 26 years, since 1970. It is due to his
industriousness, his cleverness, and - yes, I even dare to say - his gallantry, that the
members of the Korps have a feeling of solidarity and keep together, that the young people
practise enthusiastically in their spare time, not to mention the world wide appreciation
that they enjoy and his ability at overcoming snags and obstacles on the way. Nothing of
this would have been possible without the good example that Leo Ertel has been giving to
his boys and girls.
Their cooperation with the Potsdam Police Orchestra under the Musical Direction of MD
Peter Brunsing has been a long-standing tradition. It is from the professional musicians
that the young wind instrumentalists and drummers receive every possible expert support
and assistance. Also, the good reputation of the Potsdam Police Orchestra has spread far
beyond the borders of the State of Brandenburg to make many new friends to music and to
the State’s police.
